Movable boards - how to make a functional terrace or balcony enclosure?

Movable boards - how do you make a functional terrace or balcony enclosure with movable outdoor blinds? With a mechanism for patio blinds, you can regulate the amount of light, shield the space from the wind and increase privacy. In this guide, we show you how to install the system step by step so that it works smoothly and looks aesthetically pleasing.

Why choose movable boards or laths?

If you're wondering how to make movable boards that allow you to regulate the amount of light and ventilation on your patio, balcony or gazebo, you've come to the right place. Traditional shades are stationary, which limits their functionality, whereas the mechanism for movable boards allows you to adjust the angle infinitely. This allows you to shield yourself from the sun, wind and rain, but easily let in more light and fresh air when needed.

How does the mechanism for moving boards work?

The system is based on handles OpenUp Systemwhich hold the boards or laths in position, allowing them to be rotated and adjusted. The handles are available in five colours: black (RAL 9005), anthracite (RAL 7016), white (RAL 9003), dark brown (RAL 8016) and light brown (RAL 8024). You can use either wooden planks (unpainted wood, painted wood) or aluminium lamellas (unpainted, painted or wood-like) as infill, adapting the system to your needs and building style.

How do you plan the side walls of a terrace?

To make sure your built-in is a good fit, you need to plan the dimensions carefully. One set of handles is sufficient for a height of 58.2 cm, which means that if you want to build into a larger space, you will need several sets. It is very important to determine the correct installation width. The handles take up 3.5 cm, so before cutting the boards or slats you need to subtract this dimension from the planned width.

Example:

  • If you want to enclose a 200 cm wide space, the boards or laths should be 196.5 cm (200 cm - 3.5 cm).

Overlooking this detail can result in the elements not fitting perfectly into the structure.

Step-by-step installation of the mechanism for terrace blinds

1. site preparation

The first handle should be 5 cm above the ground. This is important so that the whole structure is stable. If you plan to use several sets, make sure the handles are evenly spaced.

2. Mounting the OpenUp System holders

Fitting the handles is very simple:

  • Screw the first bracket to the structure with screws.
  • Apply another bracket, positioning it in the common holes, then screw it on.
  • Connect the thin guides with clips to ensure stability.

The bottom guides of the first bracket need to be cut flush so that the whole structure fits together well. If in doubt, see the instructional video in which we demonstrate this step.

3. installation of aluminium planks or slats

Once the brackets are in place, you slide the wooden boards or aluminium laths into them. The whole thing should work smoothly, allowing the cover to open and close freely.
