Mobile patio walls - how to create a covered space open to the garden?

Do you dream of a covered terrace that becomes an extension of your living room on warm days and provides shelter from the wind on cooler evenings? Mobile terrace walls are a solution that will allow you to manage your space flexibly.

If you decide to build with mobile patio walls, you can choose sliding terrace walls or folding terrace walls with blinds. Each of these solutions has its own advantages and will work well depending on how much terrace space you have.

Why choose mobile patio walls with movable external blinds?

Terrace with canopy and side walls is a place that should be a functional extension of the house. It is where you relax and meet with friends. It connects the inside of your home with the outside world. In order to use it to its full potential, it is worth adopting solutions that provide not only protection but also flexibility in its daily use.
We have already devoted an entry to one of them: the fixed installation with movable external blinds: What material to choose for movable external blinds. This time we will focus on movable-mobility, i.e. walls that you can move.
Mobile patio walls from movable outdoor blinds allow you to adapt your patio to your needs depending on the time of day, the weather or the level of privacy you want. They allow you to create a space that is both open to nature and effectively protected from the outside.

Wide passage to the terrace

With movable panels, you can maximise the connection between the interior of the house and the terrace or garden. This is a great option if you want free access to the outside area.

Easy space management

You can transform your terrace from a sheltered space to an open, spacious relaxation area in seconds. This is ideal for those who value flexibility.

Greater privacy

Thanks to the movable slats in the blinds, you can regulate the amount of light and visibility yourself. If you need an intimate atmosphere, simply close the walls and create a cosy space.

Light control and weather protection

OpenUp blinds allow you to have complete control over the amount of light entering your interior. You can adjust them to your needs, ensuring comfort whatever the time of day. In addition, they effectively protect against moisture, wind and unwanted glances. Thanks to the wide range of slat colours, you can match them to the style of the building facade. Likewise, the handles, which allow for mobile installation, are available in five colour variants.

Contact with nature

Mobile patio walls allow you to enjoy a panoramic view of the plants and greenery around your home. In this way, the terrace becomes a natural extension of the garden and the interior of the house gains additional light and space that fixed buildings cannot give you. Such a system allows you to have full control over the area and harmoniously connect your terrace with nature.

How do you choose the best solution for mobile siding on your terrace?

There is no one-size-fits-all choice. The decision should depend on several key factors.

Ask yourself the following questions:

  • How much built-in space do you have?  Folding walls, when fully open, do require more space in terms of patio depth, but at the same time allow maximum use of the entire width of the opening. Sliding walls, when fully open, do take up some of the light, but do not require as much depth.
  • Do you prefer a threshold-free system? If you want an unobstructed passage for, for example, prams or the elderly, sliding walls are a better choice. Their construction does not require a 2.5 cm bottom guidewhich is found in folding doors.
  • What materials and colours will match the facade? Sliding walls can be made of both wood and aluminium, while folding walls are only available in aluminium.
  • How do you want to open the walls? You can even open sliding walls, as in wardrobes with sliding doors, with one hand. Folding doors require two hands to open.

If you want smooth communication without barriers, the best will be sliding terrace walls. If you want to make the most of the light of the opening, choose a folding terrace walls with blinds. In both cases you will gain a modern, functional and aesthetically pleasing solution.

Comparison of two types of mobile terrace walls: folding terrace walls and sliding terraced walls made of movable boards (external blinds in the OpenUp system)

Sliding patio walls - a seamless transition without barriers

Sliding systemsallows you to create a smooth transition between the inside of the house and the terrace without the need for thresholds. This allows you to pass freely without worrying about obstacles, which is particularly convenient for children, the elderly or wheelchair users.

When opened, the panels retract to the side, but take up part of the width of the opening. It is worth taking this into account when planning the layout of the space. Sliding walls can be made either of movable wooden planks or aluminium fins painted in RAL or woodgrain colours. The OpenUp system ensures high durability and a high-quality finish.

Folding patio walls with blinds - maximum opening of space

Folding patio walls, also known as folding patio doors, folding walls or folding wallsThis is a solution that allows maximum opening of the space. When fully folded (opened), the panels occupy a minimal part of the opening, which is a major advantage over sliding systems.

It is the ideal solution for communal loggias, terraces and modern residential architecture. The folding walls are made exclusively from aluminium fins, which are available in a variety of colours and finishes.

Compared to sliding systems, they require a little more space in terms of depth, as when folded their components stand off from the wall. If you have enough space for installation, folding patio walls can be an excellent choice.

Mobile patio walls as part of the design of a house in style

If you are planning to build or renovate a terrace, it is a good idea to consider mobile terrace walls at the design stage. What to think about:

1. integration into the body of the building

Mobile patio walls should blend in harmoniously with the architecture of the house. Consideration should be given to their height, width and method of installation so that they do not disturb the aesthetics of the façade. In the case of modern houses, they can be planned as a natural extension of large glazings.

2. space for guides and opening mechanisms

Depending on the system chosen (sliding or folding), it is necessary to allow sufficient space for the running track of the panels from the OpenUp system movable blinds. In the case of folding walls, additional depth for the folded elements must be taken into account.

3. position in relation to the sun

When planning a terrace, consider its orientation in relation to the world. South- and west-facing terraces get the most sunlight, so mobile patio walls can act as a natural shield against excessive heat build-up. If the terrace is located on the north side, you will gain a more shaded space, but at the same time it is worth taking care to provide adequate protection against wind and cold. In the case of eastern exposure, the morning sun will provide a pleasant climate for breakfast on the terrace, while mobile walls will protect against cooler evenings.

4. Electrical installations and lighting

If you are planning terrace lighting, it is worth planning in advance for electrical points that will work well with the mobile walls.

5. Finishing materials and colours

At the design stage, it is advisable to choose the right lamella material and colouring to match the rest of the façade. Mobile patio walls can be made of RAL-painted aluminium or with a woodgrain finish.

6. fit with the vegetation and surroundings

If the terrace is surrounded by a garden or pergola, it is worth planning the layout of the walls so that they do not obstruct the most beautiful views, while still providing cover where needed.

Mobile patio walls for building pergolas

Mobile patio walls made of movable external louvres work well not only for terraces, but also as a the way to build a pergola. They allow you to create a sheltered space that is a functional extension of your garden. They allow you to freely manage the amount of light, protect you from the wind and provide privacy. In this way, you can turn your pergola into a cosy relaxation area that will blend in perfectly with the architecture of your home and the surrounding greenery.
