Terrace roofing - functionality and aesthetics in one

A terrace canopy is not only a protection against rain or sunshine, it is also an architectural element. Depending on the owner's preference and the character of the surroundings, it can provide an interesting contrast or blend in subtly with the style of the building. Appropriately chosen canopies increase the value of the property, combining functionality with aesthetics. They are a decoration for the house and garden, and also protect patio equipment such as garden furniture, barbecues and decorations.

Types of roofing - tailor a solution to your needs

Terrace roofing is an investment that affects not only the comfort of the space, but also the appearance and functionality of the house. Choosing the right type of roofing depends on individual preferences, the style of the building and the available space. It is worth exploring the variety of options available in order to find the perfect solution for your needs.

Wall-mounted canopies are structures that are installed directly against the building and integrate the terrace perfectly into the façade of the house. They are the ideal choice for those who want to create a seamless transition between the interior and the garden. Depending on the construction material - wood or aluminium - these canopies can blend in subtly with the architecture of the building or provide a striking contrast. Wall-mounted canopies work well on smaller terraces, allowing maximum use of the available space.

Because free-standing pergolas are not restricted by a building wall, you can place them anywhere, such as on a terrace, by the pool, in the middle of the garden or as a cover for a relaxation area. Free-standing pergolas offer more freedom in space design. Their construction is based on solid legs, which can be rectangular or square, depending on the model chosen.

Construction materials - wood or aluminium?

Aluminium structures are characterised by modern design, durability and minimal maintenance. They are lightweight yet very strong, making them ideal for coping with harsh weather conditions. Aluminium canopies are available in elegant colours such as anthracite, white or graphite to harmonise with modern buildings.

BSH glulam is the choice for lovers of natural style. The warm, classic look of the wood blends in perfectly with the garden to create a cosy atmosphere. Wooden structures can be painted in a wide range of colours, allowing for complete personalisation. Regular maintenance, such as waterproofing or oiling, keeps them durable and aesthetically pleasing for years to come.

    Width (overhang)

Width is the distance from the front legs of the structure to the building wall, i.e. the depth to which the canopy covers the terrace from the façade. The term 'overhang' is used interchangeably on the market. Standard widths for canopies range from 2.5m to 4m, which is usually sufficient to protect garden furniture and lounge areas. For pergolas, the width is measured between both pairs of legs - from one side of the terrace to the other.

    Length

Length is the dimension that defines a straight line parallel to the building wall. It determines how large a section of the terrace will be covered by the structure. The most common lengths of canopies and pergolas start at 3 m and can go up to 6 m or more, depending on individual needs and the size of the terrace.

    Height

For terrace canopies, the height is determined at the front leg, which determines the pitch of the roof and the comfort of use. For pergolas, the height is measured to the top rim beam, which closes the structure from above. The standard height ranges from 2.3 m to 2.5 m, which ensures adequate ergonomics and spaciousness.

    Terrace canopies in our offer

At Otwrane.co.uk you will find two types of canopies: wall-mounted canopies terraced or free-standing terrace pergolas. You can choose between the material of construction (wood or aluminium) and the type of covering. We offer multi-chambered polycarbonate terrace canopies or electrically operated laths.

The colour of the lamellas can be adjusted to match the structure or contrasted.

The pergola is equipped with an integrated drainage system. A dedicated LED lighting system can be used. The maximum dimension of the pergola (5×7 m). We can increase the structure by connecting more pergolas together. For example, if you need a 5×10 pergola, we will offer you a combined development of two 5×5 m pergolas.

Why choose polycarbonate or aluminium fin roofing?

Choosing the right material for terrace roofing is a key decision that affects both the functionality and aesthetics of the space. Polycarbonate and aluminium laths are two extremely popular solutions that have many advantages.

    • Lightweight and durable
Multi-chamber polycarbonate, available in clear, milky and smoked brown, is a lightweight yet extremely durable material. It performs excellently in Polish weather conditions, withstanding heavy loads, including lingering snow. Aluminium lamellas, on the other hand, which are electrically controlled, offer a modern design and unparalleled resistance to mechanical damage and weathering, such as strong wind or rain.
    • UV protection and comfort
Both the polycarbonate and the aluminium laths provide effective protection against harmful UV radiation, which is particularly important during sunny days. In this way, the canopy protects not only the users, but also the furniture and terrace decorations from fading and deterioration.
    • Aesthetics and fitting into the surroundings
Polycarbonate canopies combined with wooden or aluminium structures create light and elegant forms that harmonise with their surroundings. Aluminium laths additionally allow personalisation - they can be colour-matched to the structure or contrasted for a more distinctive effect.
    • Controllable and adjustable light
The biggest advantage of aluminium slats is that they can be controlled. An electric mechanism allows you to set the angle of tilt precisely, which makes it possible to adjust the amount of light entering the terrace. This is ideal both during hot days when you need shade and on cooler evenings when you want to enjoy the view of the stars.
    • Minimal maintenance
Both polycarbonate and aluminium laths require minimal care. Cleaning is limited to wiping the surface with water or a mild detergent, making the canopy comfortable to use for many years.

Thanks to these features, polycarbonate and aluminium fin canopies are an investment that combines modern aesthetics, durability and functionality, enhancing the comfort of the terrace all year round.

    Make your terrace more comfortable

Sidewalls - a practical addition to terrace coverings

The canopy can be complemented by elegant and functional side walls, which increase the comfort of using the terrace regardless of the weather. In our offer you will find systems made of movable blinds - wooden, aluminium and wood-like. Each of them harmoniously harmonises with different types of canopies, creating a coherent and aesthetic whole.

For those in need of flexibility, we recommend sliding walls. This solution allows you to easily change the function of the space - on colder days you can close the terrace, and on warmer days you can expand the seating area by moving entire modules. Simple to operate, you can open the terrace to the garden or protect it from wind and rain with a single movement.

Adding side walls to your canopy significantly increases the functionality of your terrace, protecting it from adverse weather conditions. They provide you with a sheltered relaxation area that works all year round. Aesthetics and practicality go hand in hand here, offering customised solutions.

At what time is it worth ordering a patio roof?

FAQ - Frequently asked questions about terrace roofing

What are the best materials for terrace roofing?

The most commonly used materials are aluminium, wood and polycarbonate. Aluminium is durable and easy to maintain, wood gives a natural look and polycarbonate allows light to pass through while protecting against UV radiation.

Does a terrace canopy require planning permission?

In most cases, the construction of a terrace canopy does not require a permit, but this depends on its size, location and local regulations. It is always advisable to consult the municipality or a specialist.

How do you keep a wooden canopy in good condition?

Wooden structures require regular waterproofing, painting or oiling. It is also a good idea to remove debris such as leaves or dust to avoid damage caused by moisture.

Is the aluminium pergola wind resistant?

Yes, aluminium pergolas are very wind resistant thanks to their robust construction and warp-resistant materials. However, professional installation is important.

What are the costs of installing a terrace canopy?

Costs depend on the material, the size of the structure and the complexity of the design. Simple aluminium structures are the cheapest, while wooden pergolas with additional ornamentation are the most expensive.

    Is polycarbonate resistant to hail?

Yes, polycarbonate is resistant to hail, although very heavy rainfall can cause micro-damage. It is advisable to choose high quality polycarbonate with increased durability.

How long does it take to install a patio roof?

Installation time depends on the type of structure, but is usually between 1 and 3 days for a medium-sized canopy.

Can the canopy be installed in winter?

Installation in winter is possible, although more difficult. Low temperatures and precipitation can extend the working time or require additional preparatory measures.

What are the standard dimensions of the canopies?

The most common widths are 3, 4 or 5 metres, but structures with non-standard dimensions to suit individual needs can be ordered.

Does roofing a terrace increase the value of a property?

Yes, a covered terrace increases the value of the property, improving its functionality and aesthetics, which is attractive to potential buyers.

Is it possible to install lighting in a terrace canopy?

Yes, most canopies allow the installation of lighting. LED strips or spot lights that can be integrated into the structure are a popular solution.

Can the terrace canopy be fitted with side covers?

Yes, side screens such as movable louvres, sliding modules or polycarbonate walls can be added to most canopies to provide additional protection and privacy.

What are the differences between a pergola and a terrace canopy?

A pergola is a structure with an open or partially closed form, often fitted with movable laths. A terrace canopy is a more permanent structure with a roof that fully protects against rain.

    Can I order a canopy in a non-standard colour?

Yes, both aluminium and wooden structures can be painted in different colours. Aluminium often offers a RAL palette, while wood can be stained or painted to any shade.

Does the terrace roof require regular maintenance?

It depends on the material. Aluminium and polycarbonate require minimal maintenance, limited to cleaning. Wood requires regular waterproofing to maintain its durability and appearance.

What colour polycarbonate would be best for the canopy.

The choice of polycarbonate colour for the terrace canopy depends on its orientation in relation to the world and the amount of light expected:
    Transparent polycarbonate
This is ideal for north-facing terraces where access to natural light is limited. The transparent roof lets in the maximum amount of light, so that the space under the canopy remains bright, which will be especially useful on cloudy days.
    Milk polycarbonate
An excellent choice for east- and west-facing terraces. Provides pleasant, diffused light that softens the harsh sunlight in the morning or afternoon without completely shading the space. It allows you to maintain brightness while protecting you from excessive heat.
    Brown smoked polycarbonate
It will work best on south-facing terraces that are exposed to intense sunlight for most of the day. The brown roof limits the amount of light coming in, providing warm, diffused lighting that creates a cosy atmosphere and prevents the terrace surface from getting too hot.
